WB Units Explained

Why West Bengal land units differ from other states

Bigha (বিঘা)

= 20 Katha = 14,400 sq ft

Primary land unit in all 23 WB districts. Banglarbhumi, WBRERA, land mutation certificates all use WB bigha = 20 katha standard. Do not confuse with Bihar bigha (different size).

Katha / Cottah (কাঠা)

= 16 Chatak = 720 sq ft

Most-used residential unit in WB. Plot and flat sizes in Kolkata, Howrah, Burdwan, Hooghly and Nadia are quoted in Katha. Consistent at 720 sq ft across all WB districts.

Decimal / Satak (শতক)

= 1/100 Acre = 435.6 sq ft

Widely used in WB land mutation & registration documents. Equal to exactly 1/100 acre. Common in Nadia, Murshidabad, 24 Paraganas transactions. 1 Bigha ≈ 33 Decimal.

Chatak (চাটাক)

= 1/16 Katha = 45 sq ft

Smallest traditional WB unit. Appears in old deed documents (dastabejes) from pre-1980 Kolkata. Modern deeds rarely use it — multiply by 45 to get sq ft if found in old records.

Acre (একর)

= 43,560 sq ft = 3.025 WB Bigha

Used for larger agricultural and commercial parcels. Government land acquisition notices in WB specify area in acres. 1 acre ≈ 3 bighas in WB. Also common in industrial land deals.

Hectare (হেক্টর)

= 10,000 sq m = 7.47 WB Bigha

Standard metric unit in WB government agricultural data, crop surveys, and infrastructure project documents. All official WB statistics use hectares for area coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

WB-specific land measurement questions answered

In West Bengal, 1 Bigha = 20 Katha. Standard in all Banglarbhumi records, land mutation certificates, and WBRERA filings. Since 1 Katha = 720 sq ft, 1 WB Bigha = 14,400 sq ft. Do not use Bihar or UP bigha rates for WB documents — they differ significantly.
1 Katha = 720 square feet in West Bengal — consistent across all districts including Kolkata, Howrah, Burdwan, Hooghly, Nadia, and both 24 Paraganas. The Katha subdivides into 16 Chataks (1 Chatak = 45 sq ft). Most residential plots in WB are sized and priced per Katha.
1 WB Bigha = 33.06 Decimal (rounded to 33 Decimal in practice). Calculation: 1 Acre = 100 Decimal and 1 Acre = 3.025 WB Bigha, so 100 ÷ 3.025 = 33.06 Decimal per Bigha. This conversion is needed in WB mutation paperwork where one document lists Bigha and another lists Decimal.
Decimal = Satak = শতক = 1/100 Acre = 435.6 sq ft. Widely used in WB mutation documents and property registration deeds. "Satak" and "Decimal" are used interchangeably in WB official records. When a deed says "33 decimal", that is approximately 1 Bigha.
No — they differ significantly. West Bengal: 1 Katha = 720 sq ft. Bihar: 1 Katha ≈ 1,361 sq ft (nearly double). Assam and other northeastern states use different local standards. Never use Bihar conversion rates for West Bengal documents — this is a frequent and costly mistake in cross-border land comparisons.
1 Acre = 3.025 Bigha in West Bengal. Conversely, 1 WB Bigha = 0.3306 Acres. Important when comparing agricultural land rates quoted per bigha (common in Hooghly, Burdwan district markets) with rates quoted per acre (common in government acquisition notices and commercial real estate).
Go to banglarbhumi.gov.in → Know Your Property → Select District, Block, Mouza → Enter your Dag (plot) number. The Record of Rights (ROR / Porcha) shows land area in Bigha-Katha-Chatak and Decimal equivalents. For mutation status, use the Mutation section. Best time to access: early morning (6–8 AM) when server load is low. E-Porcha certified copies downloadable directly from the portal.
1 Chatak = 45 square feet in West Bengal (16 Chatak = 1 Katha = 720 sq ft). Appears in pre-1980 Kolkata and older municipality deeds. Modern property deeds and WBRERA listings do not use Chatak. If found in an old deed, multiply by 45 to convert to square feet.
